Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even to the dull and the ignorant; they too have their story. -Max Ehrmann, Desiderata

sleek and black

August 13, 2008

It’s almost a year when my computer at the office died on me. A year! The replacement I got, and currently using, is garbage. Really! It’s so frustrating trying to do some work with its very very very slow processor. I was seriously considering pursuing those Atlanta jobs, they could at least provide a much better PC. I jest of course! ;)

But the good news is, around a month ago, new PCs have arrived. And one has my name on it! And what a beauty! It’s sleek and black, with an LCD monitor to boot. I can’t wait till they have it installed on my workstation. I would love to share some pictures, but alas, not permitted here. I work at a top secret BPO industry! That pic there that I got from Dell looks very much like it.

failing miserably

Remember my post on me being on the cover of a magazine? On me having this newly found fascination with health? Well, guess what, I’m failing miserably. No surprise there. :o But seriously, I really have to do those, uhm, flexing and toning. This tire on my belly is really becoming a bother.

I’ve been meaning to do those exercises, but it feels so much better to lay in bed, watch TV, and just take Phentermine without prescription to handle my weight loss issues. Yes, I know, I’m just being lazy here. And my wife isn’t helping. Last Sunday, she baked these wonderfully yummy cookies! On Monday night, she made my favorite, blueberry cheesecake. And just last night, she had some panna cotta with peaches done. Am I lucky or what?

going around

August 12, 2008

It seems like everybody’s going somewhere. Only here at the office, a couple of colleagues went on a US trip, one went to Canada, a couple went to Malaysia and Singapore, one went to Palawan, some will go to Boracay, one is currently in Dumagete, and one is going to Europe. Of the trips my friends and colleagues had or will have, that European trip takes the cake! Oh wow! To have one of those European cruises! And seeing Paris! My wife will surely love Paris, with the cute little patisseries and cafes, and the wonderful people. It’s one of our dreams to travel to Europe. Someday, we just might get that chance. Our ultimate husband and wife vacation.

getting old

August 11, 2008

Yesterday afternoon, we drove all the way to Fairview, Quezon City, to visit my wife’s grandfather. He arrived a few days ago from General Santos, where he generally stays and manages a farm that I have yet to see. He was really happy to see us, to the point of shedding a tear or two. And it was great seeing him again, though he looked rather frail, not as frail as those carrying a portable oxygen concentrator, but very delicate nonetheless. I remember bringing him to Cafe Breton in Tagaytay for an afternoon snack of hamburger and fries. I sure wish we could do it again.

Getting old sure ain’t a walk in the park. I can only hope that when we reached that point, we have our loving family to care for us. In other countries, people send old family members to a facility where they can be taken cared of. I can only imagine how lonely that is, spending my last few years with people I don’t know. Fortunately, here in the Philippines, most old folks get to spend their senior years with family, with grandkids who listen to all their war stories. It’s all very Filipino to have an extended family and care for loved ones.

One of my fears is getting old and having no one to take care of me, coz I have this feeling that when I’m old, I’m going to be such a pain in the butt, my family will disown me. :o

i am brilliant

I just received this great present from the very crafty, not to mention very nice, Little Miss Firefly (Odette)! Thank you Odette for the kind words! What a way to start my day!

i’m passing the award to two of my favorite guys (wonderful husbands i am sure of it!) who read my blog and even brave and nice enough to leave me comments. thank you for being here, i am enjoying your company very much!

I’m relatively new to blogging, and let me just say that I’m having a blast meeting all the wonderful people. You are all very nice! And if I could have it my way, we’d fly there, book the nearest inn thru laughlin hotels, and treat Miss Firefly and KJ to a wonderful dinner. Cheers!

own a gadget

August 9, 2008

We so need a computer right now. Not so much as to play games with, but for managing our finances, and of course to blog. ;) I’m becoming an blog addict! Help! I can’t stop. There’s just so many things you can learn on the net. And it’s so much fun talking to people through blogs and online forums.

So back to why we need a PC. My wife is great with money. Me? I tend to spend it all. I have no idea where it goes, but it’s all gone. Since I’m so lousy managing my finances, my beautiful wife handles all my money and bills. She just gives me my baon (allowance) for the day, and I’m all set. She has this excel file where she inputs some figures here and there, and like magic, it computes my savings and remaining allowance. How great is that! She saves it in a flash drive, much like tape drives back in the days, so she always has a copy in hand. And with the iPhone 3G purchase temporally set aside, we might just buy a new laptop instead.

Our company has this own-a-gadget scheme where you can pass a quotation for a gadget, like a PC, and when you qualify and there are slots are available, the company gives you a cheque to purchase it. You pay the company through monthly salary deduction with your prescribed terms of payment, either six, twelve, or eighteen months! I just hope there are slots left!

looking for a UMPC

It seems like more and more manufacturers are jumping on the bandwagon of producing ultramobile PCs, which was started by the Asus Eee PC. The latest that we currently have on the market are Acer Aspire One, HP 2133 Mininote, MSI Wind, and of course Asus Eee PC 900. With so many choices and so many factors to consider, like laptop memory, screen size, resolution, etc., let’s leave it to the expert to do the thinking for us. And when I say expert I mean Yugatech. Here’s a snapshot of the comparison he did of the above listed models.

It seems like Acer Aspire One leads in terms of pricing. But like I said, so many things matter, and it all depends on one’s needs. I haven’t been able to play with one of these toys, so I don’t really know for sure if I’ll get used to the small keypad, which was initially a big problem, but experts say that one learns to adapt.

on the cover of a magazine

Two things concern me right now, health and money, so you’ll be seeing a lot of those in the coming posts. Anyway, I’ve put on a few pounds. Ok, a lot! So much so you’ll prescribed me to take diet pills. Really! People are gawking and pointing! For that reason, and in keeping with my newly found fascination with health, I recently bought a copy of Men’s Health. And it comes with a free Top Gear mag too! Well, the magazine has a lot of stuff, health stuff really, from cars and gadgets to soups that help burn fat. Yes! Soups! Can you believe that?! Soups!

I also found some relatively easy exercises so I can somehow tone those, uhm, muscles, or lack thereof. ;) I just hope I can maintain it, coz I really need to flatten my big tummy and get that six pack the guy on the cover has. I sure look a lot like him, sans the six pack, so why not eh?! The program is for three to four times a week, with different exercise variations, and in one month, I should see results.

Kimpoy’s birthday

On August 20, 2008, my sister-in-law Kim will be turning 18. Yup! A debutante! And we know how much of a big deal that is here in the Philippines. And since she doesn’t have a lot of guy friends, we were kidding her that her 18 roses would consist of her father’s pets: several roosters, fish, and a couple of dogs! Haha! And now all we need is to feed them pet supplements so they will be up for the part come August 20! ;)

Anyway, we still don’t know what kind of “party” we will give her. We were initially considering the clubhouse over at Chateau Elysee, but that’s way over the budget. Maybe it’s best if we had it at their place. And we still don’t have a menu! We want something different, way different from the usual spaghetti, carbonara, friend chicken, etc., fare that we usually have on gatherings. Maybe something less expensive yet simple to make. Any suggestions?

coolness from Zenni

When we were scouting for eyeglass frames a while back, I couldn’t believe how expensive they were. They cost thousands of pesos! And that’s without the lenses, which themselves also cost as much, makes me want to wish I could order one of those Zenni Optical $8 Rx Eyeglasses. I found their site while researching for better and cheaper options. It was interesting to find that their site offers a lot, and I mean A LOT, of options. There have a huge assortment of frames, from aluminum alloy and stainless steel to titanium varieties. I myself would choose the rimless frames. Here’s a picture of one I particularly liked.

This is just one of the incredible stylish new frames from Zenni. Explore their site, and you will find one that’s perfect for you. They have a user-friendly category window on the left so you can explore by category and budget. How cool is that?! Another thing is that Zenni Optical was on FOX news! Coolness!

too rich for my blood

August 7, 2008

Remember the iPhone 3G that I’ve been dreaming? See post here. Anyway, I was over at Yugatech’s blog (see bottom banner), and he posted that Globe, the official local carrier, will be releasing the iPhone 3G on August 22, 2008. The 8 GB variety will be 41,889 pesos, and the 16 GB will be 48,889. Can I just shout expensive! Very expensive! And here I thought Steve Jobs was wanting the iPhone 3G to be cheap. Paging Steve Jobs, do you have any idea how much your “cheap” phone is currently priced?

Here’s a screenshot of the postpaid plans offered from Yugatech. Jump to his site for more details.

I’ve been a Globe subscriber for 5 years now, and I wonder if I have some kind of discount? Anton pointed out that “if you havent availed of your rewards or loyalty program you can ask globe to credit your existing rewards and pay for the difference from the price of the 8gb or 16gb iphone.” But with these steep prices, and assuming I get that discount, I still wouldn’t be able to afford it, unless it’s in the 10k range, hehe.I read that there is an issue of overpriced iPhone 3Gs in Canada, and that people are signing an online petition. I sure wish we could do that. I was thrilled when this new “cheap” phone was announced, but this current price ain’t cheap, I’d rather buy a new laptop.

But if you have the moolah, better reserve your iPhone now. As for me, I’ll keep on dreaming. And come December, Christmas time, maybe I can buy my own cheaper IPhone 3G in Greenhills. ;)
