Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even to the dull and the ignorant; they too have their story. -Max Ehrmann, Desiderata

Ate Che

April 14, 2009

Our house help Ate Che was telling us last night of a day last week when she and her family had nothing to eat. You see, since Ate Che lives a couple of blocks away, she gets to go home every night to her family. Most of the time, she brings her two kids Agail (hoping to be a first-year high school student this June) and Dayunyor (Grade 1 student this June) with her so they can help her in someway and eat with us. She also gets to bring home whatever leftover food we have. Since we were away last week, there was no real food in the house. Around Thursday or Friday last week, she ran out of money and had no means to feed her kids. Her husband, unfortunately, is currently jobless. She dropped by the house and had to make do with the two Maggi noodles we luckily had in stock.

About two weeks ago, Agail graduated elementary and Dayunyor graduated kinder. We plan to give her a 500-peso bonus this Saturday so she could treat her kids to Jollibee, or maybe pay her utilities. In June, Agail should start high school. But we don’t think Ate Che can afford the tuition and the everyday fare to and from the school. My wife and I are calculating how much it would be and if we can shoulder the expense. We want Agail to finish at least her high school studies. She needs a good education so she can get better job opportunities.

My wife and I are longing for a day when we could treat her and her kids to a day off, maybe bring them to Enchanted Kingdom or the Ocean Park. And if we win the lottery, we’d bring them along with us on Orlando vacations, and maybe drop by Hong Kong for a bit of shopping. :) Things are a bit tight right now (for us and for them). But I know things will work themselves out. It always does.

It’s just ironic how some good people have too little and some not-so-good people have so much.

exciting weekend

I’m so stoked! We all are actually. We’re all going out of town, and we are all very excited. We were able to borrow an uncle’s Chevrolet Uplander so we could all fit. But the bad news is that I think I’m going to be the driver. :(

Anyway, we will be picking up my brother and sister in Manila very early in the morning, and that would complete our number to nine. Plus, it’s my sister’s birthday! We have a birthday cake waiting when she hops on. ;) For sure I will need my appetite suppressants because I know there’s going to be a feast waiting for us when we get to the province. My mom makes a very delicious fish relleno, which I specifically ask that she cook, and my dad would get some prawns and crabs from my cousin who has a fishload of seafood. I can’t wait. Have a happy long week everybody!

signs of times

April 4, 2009

life

Do you remember when we were small and our parents and/or grandparents would often say “Back in our day, blah blah blah.” Did you notice that we are now the ones saying that to the “new generation”? Haha! I feel so old.

About 20 or 30 years ago, drinking, smoking, premarital sex, drug addiction and going to drug rehab were considered so immoral that those doing the deed are ashamed of it. Now, when you’re the only one doing the right things, people think there’s something wrong with you. Those things are now considered as cool.

My SIL attends a bible study connect group in her school. When some of her classmates got word that she attends a bible study group, they ridiculed her. They were saying such bad words that it would shame most Christians. Good thing her faith wasn’t shaken, and she continues to regularly attend her connect group.

What have we become as a society? I think we should all have a refresher course on enriching our well being. It seems to me that we’ve fallen deeper and deeper into darker things that we refuse to accept the right thing.

clunkers

clunker

For the past few days, i.ph has been acting up again. I was really frustrated the last time it went clunkers, but I figured I’d still give it a chance. After all, this is where I began. But just a precaution, much like when one is looking for Dallas Texas hotels, I should seriously take matters in my hands and search for the best option I have. I’ll be starting to backup the posts I have here. *sigh*
