Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even to the dull and the ignorant; they too have their story. -Max Ehrmann, Desiderata

what we should dream about

July 15, 2009

Ever since I got married, my life has taken a 180-degree turn. My nightly rendezvous with the boys to some bar in Makati or Paranaque has stopped. My interests and focus were on my marriage, on my wife. I was adjusting to married life. And I’m pretty sure that my wife was going through the same things. It isn’t that easy to adjust. But after some time, we got to know more about each other. And part of knowing each other in a much deeper sense, as only married couples can do, was building our dreams. And we have a lot.

One of our bigger dreams is having our own home. Nothing fancy. Nothing grand. Just a simple little house where we, and maybe our kid(s), can grow.

We dream of having our own kid(s) too. I have this feeling that we will be great parents. My wife has this nurturing nature that can only be fulfilled by a baby, and not by a husband who acts and thinks like a baby, no matter how cute. And our dream is for that baby to become somebody someday. Someone people look up to. Someone people respect. Somebody that we and my wife are trying to be: good citizens of heaven.

We dream of travelling, experiencing new cultures, tasting new food, and seeing new and wonderful things.

In addition to the following big dreams, we also have little dreams, like maybe finding the best diet pills, or maybe buying that Canon SLR that I’ve been salivating for so long. But above all else, let us all not forget that

to own the big house, to drive the cool cars, to send the kids to the right schools, to have the right club memberships, to take the extended cruise, to have all of the latest “stuff”

isn’t all that we should dream about. Let us all dream/aspire for contentment. Read more about contentment and The Grand Illusion at FamilyLife.com.

This is my entry for Little Miss Firefly’s anniversary giveaway.
