Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even to the dull and the ignorant; they too have their story. -Max Ehrmann, Desiderata

Ton Ton Thai Massage

August 31, 2009

Our wonderful friend Rax just got back from her three-week vacation in New York, while married friends Dan-dan and JC will be kicking off their own U.S. vacation by jetting off to Hawaii first, whereas good friend Grace is on a four-day vacation with friends in Thailand. And we can’t let them have all the fun, right? We went to get ourselves some authentic Thai massage too! But we didn’t fly to Bangkok. Several minutes away was Ton Ton Thai Massage.

It’s one of those massage places that we’ve heard so much about. And we’ve been meaning to try it for the longest time. We practically drive past it every week! But almost always we find an excuse not to drop by.

Since I’ve been really sick, my back’s been aching from all the coughing. So last Friday, my wife and I decided to try their massages. Maybe I’d feel better with a bit of stretching.

The Ton Ton Thai Massage along Aguirre Avenue, BF Homes, lacks the ambience typically seen in spas. Which was actually fine by me. At Php250 for a one-hour full body massage, I wasn’t expecting much.

The place actually looks nice, albeit dimly lit. And the bathrooms look like they been rubbed by pressure washers: very clean. And there’s water to fluch the toilet. :)

It started with a foot bath (soaking your feet in hot water for a few minutes), which they then towel dry. Then, you change to the provided pajamas.

The therapists assigned to us were Vanessa and Cristina. And true to Southbound’s review:

The therapists had a no-nonsense and down to earth attitude, instructing you to lie down, or kneel, or relax, or push against them, all while they carried on the business of massaging and stretching. They were exceptionally strong for such small women, their size being an advantage, since parts of the massage called for them to sit on you or otherwise hold you down with their body weight…

My wife and I actually had a great time. We felt our body/joints loosen from all the stretching. We’d definitely come back again.
