Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even to the dull and the ignorant; they too have their story. -Max Ehrmann, Desiderata

Yuanisms

When we arrived at my inlaws yesterday afternoon, the house help told us that they were at the nearby mall. My wife busied herself prepping to bake and I was trying to nap by the garden when the door opened a few minutes later. When Yuan came in and saw us, he shouted “Nong nong!”

This little man needs no slimming pills. He’s always on the go. It seems like he never gets tired. He’s easily bored and wants nothing more than to walk, run and play. If only I (we) have the energy.

I was asking him where he went and what he did. I asked him if he went to Jollibee and ate spaghetti. To our amazement, he said “Jaaa-beee!” over and over again, and we all laughed. He laughed too. It was amazing. His capability to imitate words is rapidly expanding, and he can now associate more words with more things.

The only things he really knew then were “Dada,” “Papa,” “Mama,” and “Nong nong.” But now he knows and calls the cars and the vacuum cleaner “Brooom brooom.” He likes dogs and bugs, but he’s afraid of cats and the vacuum. And he does the funniest thing when he’s afraid. He puts his left hand on his chest, has this worried look, and runs to whomever is near him. Oh, he’s also terribly afraid of the moon. Yes, the moon. We have no idea how or why. But when you say moon he instantly puts his head on your shoulder and closes his eyes. Which is a great trick to make him sleep.

Kids these days are growing up so fast!

simple wedding

October 15, 2009

BW2

(Our friend Fara on her wedding day in Calaruega)

My mom suddenly rushed to Manila last Sunday and told me over the phone that my sister is getting married. We couldn’t be more than happy. She is after all of marrying age (28 years old).

The pamamanhikan is supposed to happen this weekend, and my wife and I are itching to go home and watch the spectacle.

You see, my mom said that it’ll be a simple church wedding. My sister on the other hand wants a simple civil wedding, without all the fanfare of wedding preps and weight loss pills to fit in the gowns. Of course being the only daughter, my mom will insist on a “simple” church wedding. But from her text messages last night about the wedding details, it sure sounds grand.

Here’s a little trivia about my mom. She’s a tiny bit stubborn. And she usually sets out to do what she wants no matter what. Good thing we didn’t involve her in our wedding. She and my wife would have hated each other. My wife has this simple, modern, elegant taste, whereas my mom has this simple but grand and traditional taste.

It would have been fun seeing my sister, her fiancé and his family all under my mom’s control. I don’t think anybody can say no to her.

Facebook newbie

October 12, 2009

I must say, with the free unlimited WiFi connection that we’ve been enjoying for three days now, we’ve had a lot more time to surf the net. For one, I got to update my Facebook. I’ve had my account for years now, and it seems that only recently has it captured the favor of Filipinos. All of a sudden, almost everybody is doing Facebook. I hear people scrambling from work just because they have potatoes to harvest. Most even stay up all night just so they can harvest their precious plants! It’s crazy!

To help me find my way around Facebook, I had the help of my wife’s sister and cousin, both in their teens. I’ve never felt so old and low tech. Sheesh!

Anyway, I’ve had the opportunity to really play Farm Town at last. But the thing is, I ran out of FT coins and can only plant a certain number of plants. This early, I can say it’s not really for me. I don’t have the patience to wait for harvest. I pity those corns and grapes waiting for harvest. I already see them wilting away.

I’m currently into Mafia Wars. Not as interactive as I was hoping, as all one really does is do click  “Do Job,” still, it’s good for wasting one’s time and energy.

I do like Restaurant City. I initially thought I had a lot of money, and that it’s easy to make a ton of money, so I spent the initial money redecorating the place, like buying new chairs and tables and uniforms, only to find out that I only get 2 coins for every meal served. It’s going to take a while before I can have anything remotely really passable as a real restaurant, that’s for sure.

All in all, I see the appeal. There are lots of things to do now in Facebook. And you can be sure that I’m willing to try all of them, even just once (just like fat burners).
