I think I just saw one of the best films this year. It’s called Red Cliff.
The film was directed by the great John Woo, stars Tony Leung, Takeshi Kaneshiro, and Zhang Fengyi, among others, and is considered the most expensive Asian movie to date with a budget of US$80 million.
The epic movie is based on events of the Battle of the Red Cliff at the end of the Han Dynasty. It was actually released in two parts, but outside of Asia, it was compressed into a 2.5-hour movie.
I was able to watch the first part in dibidi last night, and it was just awesome. It tells the story of how Prime Minister Cao Cao eliminates “rebels” and plans to conquer the southern province ruled by the emperor’s cousin. It narrates the events that go through as Cao Cao travels with his 800,000 imperial army to the southern province (makes you wish there were long distance movers then) and prepares for the ultimate battle at Red Cliff.
Now I have to go back to Ruins and get the second part.
